2021 was the first year that ShadowTech Teachers took place (an evolution of the former ShadowTech day aimed at girls in years 9-11).
In 2021, 80 teachers and career advisors spent half a day shadowing tech industry professionals from 35 companies across 11 regions in New Zealand. The teachers gained valuable real-world insight into the tech industry, enabling them to inspire and encourage their students into tech career pathways.
Feedback from Teachers
“We have a lot of students come to us to say that they’d like a career in IT; but the big picture of what that is like, is sometimes quite hard to explain to students. So coming to Orbica, and getting to see all the different roles and positions and all the different pathways into an IT career was really informative and worthwhile”.
Mike Bennet, Cashmere High School
“I signed up for ShadowTech because I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to bring more relevance into the teaching that I do with my students. Highly valuable”.
Andrea, Papanui High School
Feedback from Mentors
“We decided to sign up for ShadowTech because we think its really important for teachers and career advisors to understand the tech sector and the different jobs that are within this industry”.
Delphine Ducarinto – General Manager, Orbica
“I would recommend that other companies sign up because you just never know how your experience could help get some girls into tech”.
Kaylene – Scrum Master, Jade Software
“I signed up for ShadowTech 2021 because it was a great opportunity for us to share our business, our company and our office to teachers so that they could share what they learned to their students. It’s good that we can connect with the influence of future accountants, future business owners and future tech professionals”.
